Μια σειρά πρόσφατων σημαντικών επιστημονικών ανακαλύψεων έχει επηρεάσει δραματικά την αντίληψή μας για τον ρόλο του RNA στα κύτταρα αλλά και στο σύνολο του οργανισμού. Μεταξύ άλλων αναδείχθηκε ο ρόλος των RNA σε κεντρικούς παράγοντες σημαντικών ρυθμιστικών και αμυντικών μηχανισμών των ευκαρυωτικών οργανισμών. Η ανακάλυψη των φαινομένων της RNA σίγησης ( RNA silencing ) και των χαρακτηριστικών αυτής, μικρών RNA μορίων, κυρίως των siRNA και miRNA , έχει αναμορφώσει πολλές από της τρέχουσες αντιλήψεις της Μοριακής Βιολογίας. Η Ομάδα μας έχει επικεντρωθεί στη μελέτη φαινομένων διαμεσολαβούμενων από RNA μόρια, τόσο σε σχέση με την άμυνα του οργανισμού όσο και στη ρύθμισή του μεταγραφήματος του. Παρά το ότι τα επιστημονικά μας ερωτήματα αφορούν κυρίως στα φυτά, η μεγάλη συντήρηση κάποιων από του RNA σιγητικούς μηχανισμούς μας έχει επιτρέψει, κυρίως μέσω συνεργασιών, την μελέτη σιγητικών φαινομένων και σε ζωικά συστήματα (Δροσόφιλα, κυτταρικές σειρές ανθρώπου). Στους φυτικούς οργανισμούς, είναι πλέον σαφές ότι η RNA σίγηση διαδραματίζει κεντρικό ρόλο στην αντι-ιική άμυνα. Ως εργαστήριο μας ενδιαφέρουν ιδιαίτερα τα RNA -διαμεσολαβούμενα φαινόμενα αντίδρασης των φυτών στις προσβολές από ιούς και ιοειδή . Ανάμεσα στους στόχους μας είναι κατανόηση των εξωγενών και ενδογενών παραγόντων που επηρεάζουν την αποδοτικότητα των μηχανισμών της σίγησης καθώς και των δυνητικών εφαρμογών αυτών των φαινομένων.
