Το εργαστήριο Μεταγονιδιωματικών εφαρμογών έχει ισχυρό υπόβαθρο στη Μοριακή Βιοτεχνολογία και μια σαφή κατεύθυνση προς τη διεπιστημονική και εφαρμοσμένη έρευνα, όπως αποδεικνύεται από τον μεγάλο αριθμό επιστημονικών δημοσιεύσεων και διπλωμάτων ευρεσιτεχνίας στα πεδία της Βιοϊατρικής, της Βιοπληροφορικής, των Βιοϋλικών, της Μοριακής Διαγνωστικής κ.α.. Ωστόσο, τα κύρια ερευνητικά ενδιαφέροντά μας για περισσότερα από δέκα χρόνια τώρα, παραμένουν στον τομέα της μετα-γονιδιωματικής ανάλυσης και ειδικότερα στην διερεύνηση των μοριακών προφίλ πολύπλοκων ασθενειών και στη διαλεύκανση των μηχανισμών που τις διέπουν.

Η τρέχουσα έρευνά μας επικεντρώνεται στις διαδικασίες που εμπλέκονται στη μετάσταση του καρκίνου και συγκεκριμένα στο ρόλο των κυκλοφορούντων καρκινικών κυττάρων (Circulating Tumor Cells, CTCs) σε αυτή. Τα CTCs είναι καρκινικά κύτταρα που έχουν αποκολληθεί από τον πρωτεύοντα όγκο και έχουν εισχωρήσει στην κυκλοφορία του αίματος. Διάφορες πειραματικές και κλινικές μελέτες συσχετίζουν την παρουσία CTCs με την ανάπτυξη μετάστασης και την κακή πρόγνωση της νόσου. Ωστόσο, δεν αναπτύσσουν όλοι οι ασθενείς με ανιχνεύσιμα CTCs μεταστάσεις, ούτε όλοι οι ασθενείς χωρίς ανιχνεύσιμα CTCs διαφεύγουν την υποτροπή της νόσου. Στο πλαίσιο αυτό, η έρευνα μας στοχεύει στην ανάπτυξη νέων μεθόδων για την απομόνωση, την καλλιέργεια, τον λειτουργικό χαρακτηρισμό και την ανάλυση των προφίλ μεμονωμένων CTCs ούτως ώστε να εντοπίσουμε διακριτούς υποπληθυσμούς με υψηλό μεταστατικό δυναμικό και να αναγνωρίσουμε ειδικές συνθήκες που οδηγούν στη δημιουργία μεταστάσεων. 

Για την περαιτέρω στήριξη των παραπάνω στόχων, έχουμε αναπτύξει αρκετές ερευνητικές συνεργασίες για τον σχεδιασμό και την κατασκευή συσκευών μικροροής (microfluidics), τη δημιουργία προηγμένων μεθόδων μοριακής απεικόνισης και τέλος την ερμηνεία και την ανάλυση των μετα-γονιδιωματικών δεδομένων.
