Η πολυκυτταρικότητα στηρίζεται στη διακυτταρική επικοινωνία για τον σωστό καταμερισμό των κυτταρικών λειτουργιών και τη διατήρηση της ομοιόστασης των ιστών. Μελετάμε την κυτταρική συμπεριφορά στο πλαίσιο των αναπτυσσόμενων ζωικών ιστών και προσπαθούμε να κατανοήσουμε πώς εξωτερικά σήματα συνομιλούν με ενδογενείς κυτταρικές διεργασίες, κυρίως τη μεταγραφή. Εστιαζόμαστε κυρίως (α) στη μεταγραφική ρύθμιση της ανάπτυξης του νευρικού συστήματος και την αλληλεπίδρασή της με τη σηματοδότηση Notchκαι (β) στο μηχανισμό της ενεργοποίησης του Notchαπό τους προσδέτες του. Ως σύστημα-μοντέλο χρησιμοποιούμε τη φρουτόμυγα Δροσόφιλα (Drosophilamelanogaster), που διαθέτει τα πιο επιτηδευμένα μοριακά γενετικά εργαλεία από κάθε άλλο οργανισμό.
