Funding

Within 2009 the lab participated in two collaborative efforts that were awarded with competitive grants. The program TransMalariaBlock and the program FONCICYT-2008 /95294 (duration 4 and 2 years respectively).

TransMalariaBlock is a collaboration of European (IMBB, Imperial College, Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, University of Camerino) and African laboratories (Institut de Recherche en Science de la Sante (IRSS)/ Burkina Faso , University of Makerere, Uganda). The aim of TransMalariaBlock is to validate molecules with antiplasmodial activity (antimalaria drugs), to develop transmission blocking vaccines (TBVs) and to generate genetically modified mosquitoes refractory to malaria parasites.

FONCICYT-2008/95294 is a tripartite collaboration among IMBB, Mexican laboratories (Instituto National de Salud Publica, Universidad National Autonoma de Mexico) and the Oxitec Ltd based in Oxford . This program is 50% funded by the European Union and 50% by the Mexican goverment and aims to develop methodologies for compating malaria and dengue, two important diseases for Mexico and Latin America.
