Theodora received her B.Sc. from the Department of Biology of the University of Athens and her Master’s degree in Neurosciences from the Department of Medicine of the University of Crete. She acquired her PhD in Developmental Biology and Neuroscience at the Institute for Biological Development in Marseille (IBDML), where she studied axon guidance mechanisms regulating corpus callosum development.
Currently, she is investigating mechanisms controlling the development of cortical inhibitory interneurons. She aims to investigate the role of intracellular small Rho GTPases Rac1 and Rac3 in proliferation and cell cycle progression, as well as in the final morphological and functional characteristics of cortical interneurons. She is also interested in the mechanisms controlling interneuron myelination, and specifically the role of the cell adhesion protein Contactin-2 in this process. To answer these questions, she couples advanced imaging techniques with in utero electroporation and postnatal intracranial injections of viruses in transgenic mice, which allow tracing and visualisation of neuronal morphology at various developmental stages.
