Η ελονοσία είναι μια ασθένεια με τεράστιες αρνητικές επιπτώσεις στην παγκόσμια υγεία και την οικονομική ανάπτυξη, με περίπου μισό εκατομμύριο θανάτους ετησίως. Η ασθένεια είναι διαδεδομένη κυρίως στις λιγότερο αναπτυγμένες χώρες της Αφρικής και της νοτιοανατολικής Ασίας. Η ελονοσία αντιμετωπίζεται με την χρήση φαρμάκων που στοχεύουν τα παράσιτα του ασθενούς και με εντομοκτόνα για την καταπολέμηση των κουνουπιών-φορέων του παρασίτου. Ωστόσο η εμφάνιση ανθεκτικότητας των παρασίτων στα φάρμακα και των κουνουπιών στα εντομοκτόνα απειλούν αυτές τις στρατηγικές καταπολέμησης. Δεν υπάρχει διαθέσιμο εμβόλιο.
Η ελονοσία οφείλεται σε μονοκύτταρα πρωτόζωα του γένος Plasmodium που μεταδίδονται από κουνούπια του γένος Anopheles. Για την εξάλειψη της ασθένειας σε τοπικό ή παγκόσμιο επίπεδο είναι απαραίτητη η χρήση μεθόδων που θα εμποδίζουν την μετάδοση του παρασίτου μέσω των κουνουπιών. Όμως το γεγονός ότι, οι γνώσεις για τα στάδια του παρασίτου στο κουνούπι είναι περιορισμένες, δυσκολεύει την ανάπτυξη τέτοιων μεθόδων.
Η έρευνα στο εργαστήριό μας εστιάζει στην κατανόηση σημαντικών διεργασιών που συμβαίνουν στα αναπτυξιακά στάδια του παρασίτου στο κουνούπι, χρησιμοποιώντας συνδυαστικά τεχνικές μοριακής και κυτταρικής βιολογίας και αντίστροφής γενετικής. Τις δικές μας γνώσεις και ικανότητες συμπληρώνουν συνεργαζόμενα εργαστήρια ανά του κόσμο.
