Το ενδιαφέρον μας εστιάζεται στην ανάπτυξη μικρομοριακών συνδετών-αγωνιστών των υποδοχέων των Νευροτροφικών με νευροπροστατευτικές και νευροαναγεννητικές δράσεις και πιθανές εφαρμογές στην θεραπεία των νευροεκφυλιστικών νόσων και της εγκεφαλικής γήρανσης. Επίσης,  αναπτύσσουμε τρισδιάστατα ικριώματα στα οποία καλλιεργούμε νευρικά βλαστικά κύτταρα και ολιγοδενδροκύτταρα με στόχο την ανάπτυξη ι) νευρο-εμφυτευμάτων για την θεραπεία του τραύματος του νωτιαίου μυελού καθώς και ιι) νευρο-αισθητήρων για την ανίχνευση ουσιών με νευροαναγεννητική δράση και πιθανές φαρμακολογικές εφαρμογές στην ανάπλαση του πάσχοντος ή γηράσκοντος νευρικού ιστού.

Ανάπτυξη μικρομοριακών συνδετών-αγωνιστών των υποδοχέων των Νευροτροφικών με νευροπροστατευτικές και νευροαναγεννητικές δράσεις.

Η ανάπτυξη, η διαφοροποίηση αλλά και η λειτουργία του εγκεφάλου υπόκειται στο έλεγχο των Νευροτροφινών, όπως ο Νευρωνικός Αυξητικός Παράγων (Nerve Growth Factor, NGF). Η ελλειμματική παραγωγή ή δράση των Νευροτροφινών έχει συσχετιστεί με τα φαινόμενα εκφύλισης και γήρανσης του εγκεφάλου, πειραματικά δε και κλινικά δεδομένα συνηγορούν στην ευεργετική τους δράση στην θεραπεία των νευροεκφυλιστικών νόσων. Εν τούτοις, η πεπτιδική τους φύση περιορίζει την εφαρμογή τους στην κλινική πρακτική. Αναπτύσσουμε μικρομοριακές ενώσεις με χημική συγγένεια για τους κυτταρικούς υποδοχείς των Νευροτροφινών και ισχυρές νευροπροστατευτικές και νευροτροφικές δράσεις (Μικρονευροτροφίνες), οι οποίες διέρχονται τον αιματεγκεφαλικό φραγμό. Η δραστικότητα των συνθετικών Μικρονευροτροφινών in vivo ελέγχεται σε πειραματόζωα, πειραματικά μοντέλα των νευροεκφυλιστικών νόσων του ανθρώπου (Σκλήρυνση κατά Πλάκας, Νόσος Αλτζχαιμερ, κλπ).

Τρισδιάστατα ικριώματα καλλιέργειας  νευρικών βλαστικών κυττάρων: ανάπτυξη νευρο-εμφυτευμάτων και νευρο-αισθητήρων.

Τα τελευταία χρόνια έχει προταθεί η εφαρμογή των νευρικών βλαστικών κυττάρων στην θεραπευτική των νευροεκφυλιστικών νόσων και του εγκεφαλικού τραύματος. Αναπτύσσουμε τρισδιάστατα μικρο-νανο-ικριώματα καλλιέργειας νευρικών βλαστικών κυττάρων και ολιγοδενδροκυττάρων με στόχο την νευροβιολογική και νευροχημική διερεύνηση των φαινομένων του πολλαπλασιασμού, διαφοροποίησης, συναπτογένεσης και νευριτογένεσης των νευρικών βλαστικών κυττάρων σε συνθήκες τρισδιάστατης καλλιέργειας που προσομοιάζει περισσότερο στον ζώντα εγκέφαλο. Η τεχνολογία των τρισδιάστατων ικριωμάτων καλλιέργειας  νευρικών βλαστικών κυττάρων  στοχεύει στην ανάπτυξη νευρο-εμφυτευμάτων και νευρο-αισθητήρων για την ανίχνευση νέων νευροαναγεννητικών ουσιών με πιθανές εφαρμογές στην ανάπλαση του υπό εκφύλιση νευρικού ιστού.
