Ο Γιάννης Βόντας  έχει πτυχίο (1992) και διδακτορικό στη Γενετική Εντόμων (1997) από το Γεωπονικό Πανεπιστήμιο Αθηνών (ΓΠΑ). Έκανε μεταδιδακτορική έρευνα στη Σχολή Βιοεπιστημών στο Πανεπιστήμιο του Cardiff (1998-2001), στο Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (2001-2002) και στo  Ίδρυμα Τεχνολογίας και Έρευνας (ΙΜΒΒ-ITE) (2002-2004), αξιοποιώντας διαδοχικές υποτροφίες Marie Curie. Εκλέχθηκε λέκτορας Γ. Φαρμακολογίας στο ΓΠΑ το 2004 και Αναπληρωτής Καθηγητής στο Τμήμα Βιολογίας του Πανεπιστημίου Κρήτης (2008-2013). To 2013-14 εργάστηκε στο Innovative Vector Control Consortium-Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Το 2014 επέστρεψε στην Ελλάδα, στο ΓΠΑ ως Καθηγητής και Διευθυντής του Εργ. Γ. Φαρμακολογίας και στο ΙΜΒΒ-ΙΤΕ ως Ερευνητής. Διαθέτει πλούσια διδακτική εμπειρία, σε πολλά Ιδρύματα στην Ελλάδα και στο εξωτερικό και έχει επιβλέψει >20 διδακτορικές διατριβές. Η έρευνα της ομάδας του εστιάζει στην ανάπτυξη βιοτεχνολογικών μεθόδων καταπολέμησης εχθρών καλλιεργειών και εντόμων υγειονομικής σημασίας. Έχει σημαντικό αριθμό δημοσιεύσεων και έχει δώσει πολλές διαλέξεις, ως προσκεκλημένος ομιλητής στο εξωτερικό. Έχει διοργανώσει αρκετά διεθνή συνέδρια, ενώ είναι Ακαδημαϊκός Εκδότης και μέλος της επιστημονικής επιτροπής σε πολλά περιοδικά. Συμμετέχει και συντονίζει επιτροπές για την αξιολόγηση ερευνητικών προγραμμάτων στην Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση (ΕΕ) και σε πολλές χώρες στο εξωτερικό. Έχει εμπειρία στο συντονισμό μεγάλων διεθνών ερευνητικών προγραμμάτων που χρηματοδοτήθηκαν και χρηματοδοτούνται από την ΕΕ και τη Βιομηχανία. Διατέλεσε μέλος του Τομεακού Επιστημονικού Συμβουλίου Βιοεπιστημών της Γενικής Γραμματείας ¨Έρευνας και Καινοτομίας (2018-2020) και είναι μέλος της Συμβουλευτικής Επιτροπής του Ελληνικού Ιδρύματος Έρευνας και Καινοτομίας από το 2017.
