Στο Εργαστήριο Ανάπτυξης και Μορφογένεσης της Κρήτης μελετάμε τη μορφοποίηση των ζωικών οργανισμών κατά τη διάρκεια της ανάπτυξης και της εξέλιξής τους. Η έρευνά μας στοχεύει στην κατανόηση των μοριακών, κυτταρικών και βιοφυσικών μηχανισμών που καθορίζουν το σχήμα και το μέγεθος των αναπτυσσόμενων ιστών και οργάνων ώστε να εξυπηρετούν τον τρόπο ζωής των οργανισμών. Για να επιτύχουμε αυτό το στόχο, εστιάζουμε σε μοντέλα-οργανισμούς από τα αρθρόποδα (έντομα και καρκινοειδή) που ικανοποιούν μια σειρά από επιθυμητές βιολογικές ιδιότητες και τεχνικά χαρακτηριστικά. Συνδυάζουμε προηγμένες τεχνικές μικροσκοπίας με πειραματικούς χειρισμούς γενετικής και μηχανικής φύσης για την απεικόνιση και ανάλυση ζωντανών αναπτυσσόμενων εμβρύων με μεγάλη διακριτική ικανότητα για να καταλάβουμε πώς η πληροφορία του γονιδιώματος μεταφράζεται σε μορφογενετικές κυτταρικές δραστηριότητες όπως ο πολλαπλασιασμός, η κίνηση και η αλλαγή σχήματος των κυττάρων.
