In a News & Views article published in Nature Cell Biology, Prof. Nektarios Tavernarakis discusses a recent study showing that cancer cells use a specialized form of autophagy, termed nucleophagy, to dodge the lethal effects of specific chemotherapeutics, thereby, limiting the efficacy of these drugs. Blocking this autophagic process can re-sensitize resistant tumours, and boost the effectiveness of cancer treatments.
