As part of the IMBB Mentoring & Career Track Scheme (MCTS), two training workshops delivered by David del Álamo και Thiago Carvalho from Fellowsherpa (https://fellowsherpa.com/) were held at IMBB on 23 and 24 September, focusing on the responsible use of Artificial Intelligence in scientific writing and on the broader components of competitive grant applications.
The first workshop, “Uses and Misuses of AI in Scientific Writing,” was held on 23 September and brought together PhD students and postdoctoral researchers. Through interactive, problem-based activities, participants examined the appropriate use of AI tools in scientific writing and evaluation, including manuscripts, literature reviews, grant applications, fellowships and peer review. The workshop also addressed emerging guidelines and challenges surrounding the responsible use of AI in research.
The second workshop, “Everything That Is Not Research: Customizing Your Grant Applications,” took place on 24 September and was aimed at senior PhD students, postdoctoral researchers and junior principal investigators. It explored key non-scientific elements of grant applications, including impact statements, funder priorities, stakeholder engagement, communication, open science and data sharing, as well as CVs and narrative CVs.
Both workshops were conducted in person and featured interactive discussions and practical activities. They formed part of the MCTS’s ongoing programme of training and professional development activities designed to support researchers at different career stages.
